In Christian Orthodox tradition, you light candles for the dead and the living in church. In two alcoves in the front of the church, on the western and eastern points of the cross, are the metal or wooden trays that hold those candles – those points of light symbolizing a life. The candles for the living go in the top tray, and for the dead in the bottom. You wish long life and happiness for the living. You wish peace for the dead.
